Better to have an enemy who slaps you in the face than a friend who stabs you in the back.
The message does make you wonder. Over the years I had to learn the hard way growing up. If I was told something like this in my younger years. I would think a person crazy. What do you get from this message? Do share your thoughts. Blessings

Poets Afterthought 
An enemy slapping you in the face there is no surprise and you are not disappointed with the enemy, There is no sense of betrayal.
If a friend stabs in the back it is a shock, disappointment with the friend comes along with a deep sense of betrayal.

Well said and true. I’m more shock when it’s a friend that does it. But at the same time if they were our friend they wouldn’t betray us. It’s weird when you young you never put thought into that saying.
