FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS MY PROFESSORS HAS US INTERVIEW SIX PEOPLE FOR ASSIGNMENT, SO I DECIDED TO JUST BRING IT TO MY BLOG AND HOPE TO GET SOME HELP FROM YOU ALL IF YOU ALL HAVE THE TIME TO HELP ME OUT. I’LL POST THE WHOLE ASSIGNMENT OUT FOR YOU ALL SO YOU CAN CHECK IT OUT. IF YOU CAN’T HELP ME, I DO UNDERSTAND AND IF YOU CAN HELP ME, I TRULY UNDERSTAND AND TRULY APPRECIATE. MY DISCUSSION BOARD IS DUE EVERY SATURDAY NIGHT BEFORE 11:59.

INSTRUCTIONS: In this course your discussions (opinions) must be based on data.
You will be required to interview 6 people. They may be friends, relatives,
co-workers, or a person you just met. For each person record the gender, age,
occupation, and zip code where they live.

Ask the interviewee the
question and record his or her response. You must (1) tabulate the information
to your survey, (2) discuss your findings, (3) relate your findings to your own
opinion (did it influence your opinion?), and (4) How do your survey findings
relate to the information in the textbook or other studies? Finally, compare and
contrast your findings to those of your classmates in your second
posting.

RESEARCH QUESTION: To what extent do you think your attitudes
and behavior are shaped by advertising? What steps might you take to resist the
impact of advertising?

  1. As a psych major I can appreciate this and just did this. I believe my attitude is shaped by advertising especially if I see an infomercial about a diet pill and then I realize i haven’t been to the gym in a week. It makes you conscious of your life in a negative way. It allows you to view that advertisement as if it were you. You put yourself in that persons shoes. In order to avoid these things I probably would stay on top of my game and work out as much as I can during the week to avoid that guilty feeling.

  3. To what extent do you think your attitudes and behavior are shaped by advertising?

I’d love to say that I’m immune but I’m not. We all hold a general bias when we buy something from the grocery store to when we buy clothes or choose what movie we’re going to watch all due to advertising. Advertising has a powerful impact on the decisions we make. From what medications we should use to what lawyer we should hire. Things that promote healthy living is a big philosophy now being played out on ads here in canada. I think to a great extend ads have shaped a large part of my descision making process. It’d like to think that I make the right choices, however, as a society we heavily rely on ads the really formulate our philosophy of life to some extent because we are bombarded by the idea that we have soo many choices when not every choice is a good one and not everything advertised is 100% truth-telling in its marketing scheme. I think to some extent i’m influenced subtly but at the same time it’s hard to measure how much of an impact advertising has had on me…but I know one thing for sure…it’s the best medium used to distribute information to that masses to make a choice about a particular product or service in order to form an collective opinion to gain customers who agree to the information being ‘served’ to us. i guess the question is wondering how much am I buying into all of these ads…hmmmm hard to measure. That’s all I can say about that.

What steps might you take to resist the impact of advertising?

i think that when it comes to a new product, make a comparision with other brands before making a choice. But that’s not resisting the impact of advertising now isn’t it? i think that there is no way to completely shield oneself from the impacts of advertising because we buy things on the reliance of adverts distributing information to make us make what we hope to be an informed decision to purchase a product. I think we can’t resist it, but we can minimize the impact by becoming more knowledgable about brands and the effects one has over another. It’s a tricky question.

    hope my answers help.

  4. As much as I would think that my attitude is not affected by advertising, I can honestly admit that it does. Again, that’s my honest assessment, I’m not going to be blind about it. Although, no. I do not mean advertisements in forms of big pictures on the roads or pop-up windows on my monitor or telemarketing products I see on TV. I’m talking about the influence of advertising by others, virtually through blogging or by personal acquaintances. Let me elaborate through the best example I have in mind. Whenever I see something from someone’s page showing images of their travels, either I get jealous and wish I go to where they went or wish I go back to wonderful places I had gone. I don’t think my urge to travel places came to me in a snap. Although I don’t think influence from other people was the source for my itchy feet, I certainly think that it greatly increased my drive of being so. Advertising is an old and most successful form of business, it’s lifespan won’t die and it’s growth won’t ever stop. It is in our very human nature to listen to our self-esteem, and that advertising definitely has ways to take advantage of that in subliminal, practical, helpful and/or diabolical forms. We, all, are impulsively and intentionally affected by it.
